Kala Pani - Pakistans vanishing Boat Builders
-An Industry built by Hand-

Along the darkened waters of Karachi's Fish Harbour, tucked beside the noise and smell of the Machli Mandi, lies one of Pakistan's most overlooked industrial corners. Kala Pani — named for the blackened harbour water that surrounds it — is the country's largest wooden boat building yard, where fishing vessels have been built entirely by hand for generations.
No blueprints. No drawings. The knowledge lives in the hands and minds of the men who work here, passed down from father to son, ustad to apprentice, across decades of sawdust and salt air.
But the yard is dying. Rising material costs, cheaper fibreglass alternatives, and decades of government neglect have reduced what was once a thriving industry of thousands to a fraction of its former self. The boats are fewer. The workers are aging. And the generation that might have carried this craft forward is disappearing into other work.
This is an ongoing documentation of what remains.
